01 How many landscape lights can a 600W transformer power?
The MLR-TF04 supports up to 600W of total lighting load. For reliable long-term operation, we recommend using no more than 80% of its rated capacity (480W). For example, it can power up to 96 LED fixtures rated at 5W each, provided the load is properly distributed and voltage drop is managed.
02 What are COM1 and COM2 used for, and how much power can each handle?
COM1 and COM2 are common return terminals used to connect landscape lighting cable runs. Each COM terminal supports a maximum load of 300W, with a combined transformer capacity of 600W. Both terminals share the same power control and cannot operate as independently controlled lighting zones.
03 Can I connect multiple cable runs to this transformer?
Yes. The MLR-TF04 supports multiple cable runs through its COM terminals and voltage taps. This allows you to distribute lighting across different landscape areas while managing voltage drop. Ensure the total load stays within the transformer capacity and each COM terminal's 300W limit.
04 What is the purpose of the 12Vβ22V voltage taps?
The transformer offers 12V, 13V, 14V, 15V, 16V, 17V, 18V, and 22V AC outputs to compensate for voltage drop over longer cable runs. Select the appropriate tap based on cable length, wire gauge, connected wattage, and the operating voltage range of your fixtures.
05 Can I connect 12V landscape lights to higher voltage taps?
Yes, provided the actual voltage reaching each fixture remains within its rated operating range. Higher voltage taps help compensate for voltage drop on long cable runs, but excessive voltage can damage LED fixtures. Always verify compatibility before selecting a higher tap.
06 Does this transformer include a timer and photocell?
The MLR-TF04 is available in two configurations: Transformer Only and Transformer With Photocell & Timer. The mechanical timer enables scheduled operation, while the photocell automatically controls lighting based on ambient daylight. Select your preferred configuration before purchasing. We highly recommend the one with photocell & timer.
07 Can COM1 and COM2 control two lighting zones independently?
No. COM1 and COM2 are common return terminals for distributing electrical loads, not independent lighting zones. Both operate under the same power control, timer, and photocell settings.
08 Is this transformer compatible with LED landscape lighting?
Yes. The MLR-TF04 is compatible with low-voltage AC landscape lighting fixtures, including LED spotlights, path lights, well lights, and deck lights. Make sure your fixtures support the selected output voltage and AC power.
09 Does the transformer have overload and short-circuit protection?
